The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse

“The Lighthouse” is an artwork created by Michael Parekowhai, which is on the end of Queens Wharf in the central city in Auckland, New Zealand. From the outside it looks like a standard state house with a deck and a stair case that lets visitors look in through the second story windows. It has a sculpture of Captain Cook sitting inside, which takes up a large amount of the space and has neon lights made into constellations on the walls.

The Lighthouse

It cost $(NZ)1.5 million to make and was controversial especially given so much money was used to make a copy of a state house given the problems Auckland has with homelessness and a house crises with very expensive rents and property prices. It has to be said that none of the money came from rate payers or taxes, as it was made up from a $1 million donation from Barfoot & Thompson, with the rest from private donations.

The Lighthouse

The name “The Lighthouse” comes from the fact that it is a house – in particular one that is facing the sea – that has remains lit up from inside 24 hours a day. This means that all of the neon lights are on during the daytime too at least.

The Lighthouse

I actually like it and don’t think it’s nearly as bad as people complaining about it while it was being set made it sound like. Certainly given that was paid for using donations I don’t mind it at all and I do think people, (and businesses in this case), are free to donate money to anything they want to and there’s reasons why the private donors choose to donate money to this rather to things like the charities that look after homeless ad other poor people.

The Lighthouse

It is interesting to look inside and I really like the fact that people can use the stairs to get a different view from the second story windows. I do wonder what it would have been like if he had the $1.9 million budget he would have needed in order to make things like the chandelier talked about…
